SOA Shortfall - maybe when IT driven

Whenever you read such a headline you should remember that concepts like SOA have come up to solve business problems primarily. Business drives IT. But it seems that most of these approaches tend to become self sustaining and evolve to a business on their own. IT driven SOA project tend to fail.

Accenture CTO Donald Rippert said SOA has been stuck in the second phase and implementers have been able to create Web services from legacy applications only but not implement a process model (see also infoword article).

Do you remember the early days of SOA? We had long discussions about services, contracts, messages about definitions, purpose and usage scenarios. You will find tons of great books and online publications about these topics. But you will find only a few usefull publications about mapping business concepts to service oriented solutions.

I really like to work Uli Homann has done about business capability modelling. He has demonstrated that granularity will become a key concern when designing service oriented solutions. He also realized that a business driven method is the only feasable approach. After a while Microsoft developed the Motion approach, which extend capability modelling to a full blow methodology.
